You’re Engaged! Now What?

In the beginning, there’s so much to do and think about, it can be a little overwhelming. Where do you start? Take these 10 steps to get you started on your wedding planning journey.

You're Engaged, Now What?!

1. Celebrate

Pop some champagne and toast to a beautiful new life ahead of you. Admire that pretty new rock on your left hand and give your man a few extra kisses. He must have spent countless hours sourcing the perfect ring, and the perfect way to ask you to be his wife, so he deserves a little extra love. Don’t you think?

From this day forward, everyone will be asking how he proposed to you. Work on a shortened version that relays the magic and beauty of the special moment. Be sure to pick up the phone, and personally call everybody before posting to social media. They will certainly appreciate it!

2. Buy A Planner

This is a must have item to stay organized during your wedding planning process. There are so many great options out there to use. I’ve personally heard great reviews for the Wedding Planner & Organizer by Mindy Weiss, jam packed with worksheets, schedules, and checklists.

3. Find Inspiration

One of my favorite places to find inspiration these days is Pinterest! I’ve been an active pinner since they first released it back in 2010. Be sure to follow me for wedding inspiration! Or, buy a few wedding magazines, and start envisioning what your perfect wedding day might look like.

4. Talk Budget

There is no avoiding this topic, weddings cost money – a lot of money. So, sit down with your fiancé, and talk about what you both can afford for your wedding. If your parents, or both sets of parents will be contributing financially, be sure to include them in this discussion as well. This number will affect every decision you make during the wedding planning process. It can be an uncomfortable conversation, but it needs to happen.

5. Pick A Date

This can be a tough decision. If you are having trouble narrowing down your date to a specific day, start broader with a season, and then work from there. What time of year can you see yourself getting married in? The time of year that your wedding date falls in, will play a big role in determining which venues and photographers are available to you, so keep this in mind as you make your final decision.

6. Book A Photographer

In my humble opinion, this is the most important step. Photographers, such as myself, usually book weddings at least six months in advance and our calendars fill up quickly during the wedding season. To ensure your dream photographer will be available on your wedding day, be sure to book early. Some photographers, such as myself, include a free engagement session with some of their packages. Take advantage of it!

7.  Create Wedding Website

This is the fun part!!! Creating a wedding website is a great way to share your proposal story, your wedding registry and give your guests a sneak peak into the look and feel your wedding will have. And that is where Squarespace comes in! With six brand new templates, easy drag and drop tools, and clean interface, Squarespace is a beautiful, creative way to keep your wedding guests informed.

8.  Start A Guest List

Speaking of guests, you need to start thinking about who you might want to invite to your wedding. Sit down with your fiancé and start writing down all of the people you want to celebrate your marriage with you. If the list starts to overwhelm you, read our tips on how to keep the guest list under control.

9.  Send Save The Dates

There are so many great options for save the dates. The sky is the limit! One of my absolute favorite companies for paper goods such as save the dates is Minted. Minted gives brides like you, the opportunity to be connected with designers from all over the world! They have what seems to be limitless designs for stickers, magnets, and postcards to let your guests know to save your wedding date.

10. Relax

Yes, this is a step – an important step. The wedding planning process should be fun, not stressful! If you followed the steps above, you have already gotten through a lot of the tough decisions. Now relax and breath. Everything will work out the way it is supposed to, and before you know it, you will be walking down that aisle fighting back tears as you realize, it’s finally happening, you’re getting married!!! Always remember why you are getting married in the first place, because you love each other and want to celebrate that love with your friends and family.

Wow! What an excellent list one i will be keeping handy for when/if this happens for me! Especially love the tip about celebrating and getting a wedding diary for planning. i love a good schedule, one I can stick to but still looks pretty.

One of my friends had a wedding website and it was really a lovely touch. Being able to see their progress got me excited for the big day, as I’m sure it did the other guests.
