REI Makes A Bold Move
A few days ago, outdoor apparel and equipment retailer REI, made a bold move against Black Friday. Traditionally spent with mass crowds, long lines and hasty customers, REI has stated they will be closing all 143 of their stores on Black Friday this year to opt outside . No sales, no doorbusters, no waiting in line. Just pure fresh air.
According to the National Retail Foundation, 86.9 million people shopped on Black Friday across the United States. In recent years, it has become a competitive game among retailers of – who can open the earliest. This leaves families scarfing down their Thanksgiving dinner, or skipping it all together to avoid missing the sales. REI has recognized this trend and says, enough is enough.
REI wants to start a new Black Friday tradition with their #OptOutside campaign, encouraging consumers to go outside, and spend the day with their friends and family.
For Josh and I, life has always been about charging forward towards our wildest dreams. We strive to create a life centered around nature, and the beauty this planet has to offer. That’s why we have been working hard these last few months to downsize our lifestyle and finish renovating our 1976 Airstream to travel the world. We’re honored to stand with REI as they redefine the consumerism dominated holidays by closing their doors on Black Friday and choosing to #OptOutside. Thanksgiving is a time to be spent with friends and family, celebrating the things that you already have and are grateful for. “While the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we’ll be spending our day a little differently.” Join us. Take a stand and join REI’s campaign by showing your support and sharing where you’ll be on Black Friday. Opt Outside.
