Adventure On The Road : Sweet Creek Trail

The adventure continues today as we drive to what seems to be the middle of nowhere. Salty air filled our noses as we checked out of our hotel on the Oregon Coast and headed inland to Sweet Creek Trail. As we dove into the trees we began to feel like we had exclusive access to the heart of Oregon. You don’t always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breath, trust, and see what happens. This is when the magic really starts to unfold.

The road leading up to the trailhead was an empty one. There were no cars going our direction, and there weren’t any going the other way either. The ground was wet and the leaves made a beautiful mosaic of reds and oranges as they lay, stuck to the ground in disarray. It was a warm 45 degrees this morning as we started out on our hike through Sweet Creek Trails.

Deeper into the trail, we discovered that we wouldn’t be hiking directly on the ground. A carpet of fallen foliage made our path a beautiful red in contrast to the vibrant green backdrop that was the forest.

Then, as we walked deeper into the forest, the temperatures began to drop…or maybe the dampness of the forest slowly began to penetrate our clothes. Either way, Josh couldn’t resist breathing heavy like a fool, probably scaring all the little creatures of the forest  nearby.

Our curiosity to push further was met with consistent amazement after rounding each corner and being presented with yet another stunning backdrop of greenery in all new shapes and arrangements. Josh loves to push forward, but never rounds the corner without looking back to make sure I’m coming.

As I walked up to him, I began to share his excitement as the sound of rushing water began to weave its way through the trees. Walking out of the edge of the forest, we were presented with this lovely multi-level water fall. What it lacked in size and power, it made up for with a delicate sound matched with soft beauty as it fell down multiple drops. It rushed in places and trickled in others. Little did we know, this was only a taste of what was to come…

The water continued to parallel the Sweet Creek Trail and we were granted glimpses of it as we snaked our way upstream. Again and again, we were blown away by the richness of the color and the clarity of the water flowing over the rocks. In the process of taking this picture below, I slipped on one of the large rocks next to the water and nearly went for a swim after sliding on my bum nearly ten feet. Josh grabbed me by the arm and saved my life just as I was about to plunge into the water below! It was pretty scary!!!

Waterfall after waterfall we just couldn’t get enough. It was as if nature was trying to out do itself and around every corner it would whisper, “well if you like that, your going to love this!”

Adventure On The Road : Sweet Creek Trail

We past a total of 11 waterfalls on the 3 mile hike through Sweet Creek Trails. The waterfall below was our absolute favorite. We spent a long time just sitting and watching as the water pooled and fell over the three levels here.

This last waterfall was the largest and grandest of them all. After Josh surveyed the fallen tree as a potential means to make it further up the creek, it was soon decided that it would be too slippery and the consequences too sever if we fell from it. So we had to stop hiking and turn around.

Before we did, I stood atop the moss covered rocks to give a sense of scale to the waterfall’s size. A photograph still doesn’t do it justice! What you can’t see below, is the continuation of the waterfall rushing into the creek another 70 feet or so. This was the beginning of the Sweet Creek, but the end of the hiking trail. Such a perfect way to end.

Unapologetically, we were so busy soaking up the moment, we forgot to take more photos. Sometimes you just have to live in the moment, because you won’t ever experience it again. Be present. And appreciate the little things.

Sometimes you read a blog and it is as if it was just meant to be. The photos are gorgeous and your message perfect for me right now. I have been lying in bed pondering some things and your words resonated so much so that I am going to follow them…

The photos are beautiful and remind me how much I love walking in the woods.
